Best of Gartner:  Insights from the Gartner Symposium 2021

This event has become a staple part of the CIOCAN Event Calendar and a favourite of CIOCAN members. This presentation pulls selected nuggets from this year’s Symposium that are critical for Canadian CIOs to know about and build upon.

As the world reopens after the pandemic, CIOs need to continuously execute in a chaotic but hopeful business environment. Seizing digital business opportunities and responding to adversity require leaders to be dynamic and to prioritize and exploit technology for business advantage in new and innovative ways. At the same time, business resilience is one of many complex business challenges creating ongoing market turbulence.


CIOs must focus now on how to consolidate the influence they have gained, while dealing with greater pressures to deliver strategic outcomes with a constrained and often stressed talent pool.

About the Speaker:

Steve Heck is an Executive Partner with Gartner Executive Programs.  As an Executive Partner, Steve functions as a strategic advisor, partnering with CIOs, C-Level Leaders and their leadership teams, guiding them as they execute business strategies that are underpinned by technology.  

Steve brings to this position his rich experience from Microsoft.  In his role as CIO at Microsoft Canada, Steve was accountable for all technology-related activities delivered by Microsoft IT.  By running IT as a business, Steve was able to overcome barriers to success by development strong, ‘trusted advisor' relationships between the IT and Microsoft Canada's business executives.  

Steve also has significant experience leveraging the power of data and analytics to deliver on the promise of big data for BMO, CIBC and Dun & Bradstreet. 

Steve is an active member of the CIO Association of Canada and holds a MA (Economics) from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.
